Purpose: To evaluate the frequency and outcome of BI-RADS category 3 lesions detected on the screening breast ultrasonography (US).
Materials and Methods: From January 2006 to December 2006, 2077 patients performed screening breast US. We reviewed the frequency, clinical course, and outcome of BI-RADS category 3 lesions detected on the screening breast US.
Results: The patients were all females with mean age 49 years old (range, 21-77 years old). The frequency of category 3 lesion was 4.4% (92/2077). Biopsy was performed in 9 patients (9.8%) and confirmed benign lesions. Among the 64 patients who received follow up imaging studies, 3 patients were re-categorized as category 4. The biopsy results were all benign.
Conclusion: The frequency of category 3 lesions detected on the screening breast US was acceptable, and US follow up was enough for management of these lesions.
